How to connect a video recorder to a set top box?

Connecting a DirecTV box and a DVD recorder to an old set w/ no other video input?

  • I've got an old Sharp tv set that has a DirecTV box hooked to it for watching regular programming. I just got a dvd player/recorder that I want to hook up to it. There is no separate video input. I've got it plugged in as follows - from satellite to DirecTV box to DVD player to TV. I'm not able to view a DVD playing. Any help on how to accomplish this without unplugging/pluggin in cables is appreciated.

  • Answer:

the simplest way (which I have done personally) is to purchase an A/V selector. The simple ones run from about $15-$20 and work great! Look at this link for Radio Shack for some specifics: http://www.radioshack.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2032200&cp=2032057.2032187.2032188 The less expensive ones are at the bottom of the page. You can also find them at WalMart or Target in the electronics section.

YOu might be able to buy a splitter for it or something but if not you will just have to connect and disconnect cords when you want to watch tv or dvd

Purchase a tv Modulator with RF in's and Out's then you can watch it on channel 3
