What's a good HD reciever?

Connecting 2 tv's to 1 Hd directv reciever?

  • I'm trying to connect 2 hd tv's to 1 hd directv reciever. The 2nd tv is in another room, the 2nd tv is connected by hd component wires to the reciever so there is one open hdmi port on the reciever. There is no coax output on the directv box, I already have a 50 coax cord and dont want to pay for a hdmi cable that long. Is it possible to connect a hdmi cord to the reciever and then have an hdmi/coax adaptor (if they exist) with the coax cable connected to the 2nd tv. If so, will the signal be in hd?

  • Answer:

I don't think you can find a 50 ft HDMI cable since I don't think an HDMI transmitter is spec'ed to transmit that far. Besides, it would probably be very expensive, given what a 6 ft cable costs these days. It's possible to install two HDMI-to-coax converters, one at the DirecTV receiver end, the other at the 2nd TV, tie the converters together with coax, then connect the HDMIs to their respective devices. You shouldn't lose any signal in the conversion. Just that the converters aren't all that cheap. You might want to compare these schemes with installing a 2nd receiver at the 2nd TV. Since you're not getting the DVR, you don't have to worry about Whole House service or On Demand programming. Just the upfront install and the extra monthly cost of a 2nd receiver.
