What is the USB port on my sky+ box for?

I have a sky+ box and I want to transfer stored programs to my PC. Is this possible? Can I use the USB port?

  • Answer:

I don't think you can. Sky+ recordings keep the VideoGuard encryption that they're broadcast in, so can't be read by a PC (I don't even think a PC picks up a Sky+ formatted drive). The USB port is for future upgrades and new hardware they might release in the future (it's still powered, so you can charge things up like MP3 players and phones and other devices that can be charged by the USB port in a PC) but that's about it. There's a program called Copy+ which copies your drive's contents onto another drive, but this doesn't decrypt the recordings so that they can be read by a PC it just copies the raw data so that a bigger drive can be installed without losing your recordings. The only way really is to get a TV tuner or video capture device for your PC and plug the Sky+ box into that and record the programmes manually in real-time.

You can if you get a video capture card and save it as an mpeg or avi on your hard drive by playing the programs that you've recorded. The USB on your sky box, as far as i know, doesn't do anything yet.

Yes, you can use the USB port. It's even better if you have the USB flash drive but make sure the USB flash drive have enough space for all your programs.
