How can I transfer video from a dvr box to a computer?

I have a DVR box thru our cable company, ...?

  • can we transfer a tv program that is saved to the DVR hard box to a different format so that it can be transfered between tv's or on a computer, etc. The problem I see with using the dvr vs. a video tape is that you cannot take the DVR recording to a different "recorder" to play it at another tv. Am I right or is there a way to do this?

  • Answer:

It may depend on your provider and box manufacturer. Worst case it could be (painfully) done via a video capture device. You'd have to connect the box to the capture device/card and allow the capture software to stream and encode the program. I don't know that it would be worth the effort to do it this way but if you really want a show on your PC or on DVD this could accomplish it. This may also work if you send the audio/video out to a DVD Recorder. I don't have one so I'm not sure what type of inputs they have.

the only way to do this is to play the program and record it with the vcr other than that, theres no other way.

Actually, there's a very simple solution... All you have to do is either plug the other TV into the back of the cable box...(you can use the co-axial connection) or if you only have 1 output on the box....then just get a splitter.. and you can watch the movie on the other TV.
