Why are there more HD channels in satellite versus?

Can I watch HD TV channels without cable or a satellite dish?

  • I don't think there is cable where I live and the block of flats bans satellite dishes. Is it possible to watch HD TV channels with just a set box alone? If so, can someone out there recommend what I should get?

    Unless you're way, way, WAY out in the boonies, I'm pretty sure you can get cable. Also, it's illegal for the housing association to prevent you from getting a mini-satellite dish, like the ones used by Dish Network or DirecTV. (the full-sized 3-6 foot dishes are another matter...) But it is still possible to get HD channels without either cable or satellite. You will need a standard antenna, and a a tuner that can handle HD channels. Most HDTVs come with this tuner built-in, otherwise you'll need to get a HD-digital tuner from the store. You'll only get what channels are broadcast locally, like your local NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, etc. Most of these are now broadcasting in HD. But if you want channels like Food Network, ESPN, or CNN, you will have to subscribe to either a cable or satellite service.

Yes, local TV stations broadcast HDTV over the air. Over the air HD antennas are available most anywhere and can be mounted inside your attic, and as long as you live close enough to a metro area that has it's own local channels, you will be able to pick up TV in high definition.
