How do I make my VCR/DVD work with my TiVo?

Is there a way to make a Tivo series 3 work as a standard DVR w/o the subscription?

  • I really have no need for the subscription service and do not want to rent an overpriced DVR from Time Warner. I would love to purchase my own, but have so far been unable to locate a DVR with 1-2 tuners, that will support cable card. So my questions are. 1.) Can a Tivo series 3 be made to work as a standard DVR? 2.) If not does anyone know of a stand alone DVR with 1-2 digital tuners? Do you know of any that support cable card? 3.) Are there any Stand alone DVR that I can PURCHASE, that will have multiple HD tuners and have a DVD recorder?

  • Answer:

Hi kerianhal, A TiVo series must have a subscription to work. My favorite DVR that requires no subscription and has a built in DVD recorder is the Pioneer 550H. You can read about it here - http://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-DVR-550H-S-Multi-System-Recorder-Built/dp/B000QUN5HE/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1201536462&sr=8-1 Norm

You cannot do that, but you can buy a standard DVR (Archos DVR Station Gen 5) sold at Circuit City. Hope this helps!
