Is the DVR that you can get with Time Warner cable any good?

I have a Time Warner wifi router. I use a cable splitter to get basic tv off it. Can I use DVR?

  • Answer:

Any DVR will work. Split the cable line before it goes into the modem. One leg to the modem, the second leg to the DVR Coax splitters are available at every electronics store, most department stores, Wal-mart and Best Buy. Splitting a cable will cause signal loss but with just one split you should have more than enough signal so it won't be noticed. Since you already have the coax split (you have enough signal) hook up the input of the DVR to the output of the splitter, then the output of the DVR to the TV set. EDIT IF you have BASIC only cable (analog) and NOT digital any DVR will work for manual recordings. If you want the channel guide there will be a monthly subscription fee. IF you want digital cable recording only a DVR from Time Warner will work or any DVR that accepts a Time Warner channel card, FEE involved.

You can get the TW DVR, but you need to subscribe to the TW digital basic to use that. You can get a TiVo, but you need to subscribe to that, or pay more up front for Product Lifetime. A Series 3/TiVo HD/Series 4 may require Cablecard, which may require digital subscription. You can build a PC DVR, usually by just adding a tuner to any PC.

Using a cable splitter without an amplifier will split the signal and reduce signal strength.
