What is a good HD antenna?

What are the advantages of hooking up an OTA HD Antenna?

  • I have dish network SD package and upgraded my dish and dvr/ Receiver to HD. I bought the upgrade on amazon so I didn't have to sign another contract. Now I find out I have to pay extra for HD threw dish. Would It be worth it to install a HD antenna on my roof to get over the air locals? It would cost about $100 to do this or dish has a $99 HD for life/ no contract.

Hi, I do know that signing a 2 year contract is a very real issue for some. If you account was upgraded to HD, which means you have an HDTV, and HD receiver and the proper satellite orbitals from your dish, then you should already have your locals in HD if they are available in your area. DISH Network does offer Free HD for Life, which will save you $120.00 a year. This gives you all the available channels in programming package in HD. You can get this promotion two ways: 1. Sign up for credit card auto-pay with paperless billing and agree to a 24 month commitment. 2. Pay a one time $99.00 fee. No contract and no auto-pay requirement. The previous poster is correct about maybe only needing a pair of rabbit ears. This will depend greatly on where you live. I use one in my home for the sub channel access and also in case of severe weather outages. Big draw back of the OTA channel is that the programming is not condensed at all. When I record off an OTA channel it takes up a huge amount of space on my hard drive. If you would like for me to review your account, please e-mail me directly. If you could include your satellite orbitals, it will help. On your remote, press Menu-6-1-3 and on line "g", please tell me what satellites you show. Thank you! The only reason I could see for putting up your own antenna to get OTA digital (not necessarily HD, you will find) is that certain TV stations offer multicast programming (the -2, -3 etc channels), programming that Dish may not carry due to capacity issues. I have my own antenna mounted in my attic to get OTA digital signals. I kinda like getting those PBS stations (PBS World, Create, PBS Kids), MeTV vintage shows, and the music stations like The Cool TV and The Country Channel. But it's up to you to figure out if worth it.

first of all do you have an actual HD tv if not its a waste of time and money 2. you dont have to put an antenna on the roof if you have a hd ready set. 3. if your tv has a built in hd tuner then just get a set of hd rabbit ears or what they call a hd flat panel. 4. they make OTA converters for about 30 bucks that will get the job done as well if you dont have hd tuner built in.
