How do I get my TiVo DVR to update on the Internet?

Does Tivo have to have a phone connection to update or can I use wireless internet?

  • I just moved into an apartment and have no phone or internet connection yet. The only reason I would need a phone line installed is for my Tivo to work. Is there a cheaper way to go and just hook my Tivo up through my internet or wireless internet instead? I dont need to network it, I just want it to be a stand alone and update itself automatically instead of having to buy a phone line just for the use of a Tivo. Any suggestions? Id really like to only have internet and not get a phone line.

A standalone Series 2 or 3/HD TiVo can connect to an ethernet or wireless home network. For wireless, you should get the TiVo brand adapter, as it works best and is the only supported adapter that is readily available. Series 1s need a network card added to connect with ethernet to your router or a wireless bridge.
