How do I transfer VHS to DVD?

How do I transfer a copy-protected VHS movie to DVD?

  • I've got some rare 80s movies on VHS that are not available on DVD. I want to transfer these movies to DVD, but my VCR/DVD combo unit will not allow me to burn a copy-protected VHS movie. Is there any way around this? Not looking to make a profit and sell these; I just don't want to risk ruining the tape or getting it stuck in the VCR so I prefer the movies on DVD. These are for my own personal viewing pleasure.

  • Answer:

Easy done. Play the tape to your TV. Then either run the TV video/audio out to your DVD burner and kick it off or run the output from the tape player directly to the DVD burner. In either case the DVD burner needs to be a separate unit from your tape player. Good Luck, Dr Dan

Buy a DVD recorder with inbuilt memory. Play the video on your TV and record it into the memory of the recorder, then burn it onto a DVD.

Most VHS movies are protected with the Macrovision copy protection system, so even if your player would "let you" copy it, the colors would be distorted and wavy lines would show on the video. Devices exist (available on the web at some electronics stores) which can "stabilize" the video so it can be copied.

it's gonna be hard,if their THAT important in value to you,i'd suggest taking them to a professional place to do it and not risk ruining the tape...otherwise my suggestion would be to record it onto another "non-macrovision protection" vhs and then record it to DVD if thats possible...otherwise the only other possible option is to break the security feature...but that also risks the VHS tape,so do your research if your going to go through with that option
