Do all DVDs play in HD?

Will every hdd/dvd recorder play hd dvds?

  • Help! I'm confused. I have a HD ready TV which has built-in freeview. I'd now like to get a hard drive/dvd recorder that will record from Freeview but also play HD DVDs. Will all recorders do this? I've been looking at the Philips DVDR357 which is described as having 'HDMI'. I'm not sure if that means it will play HD DVDs. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  • Answer:

Sadly no. You have to buy either a HD-DVD player or Blu_ray player (or PS3) to play those formats.

At the moment, there are no DVD recorders which have both hard drive and the ability to play HD-DVDs. You'll have to wait a while for one of the manufacturers to get one on sale.

HDMI is the name for the digital connection from the DVD to the TV, it doesn't mean that the DVD player will play HD-DVDs. You'll need to buy an HD-DVD player, and I'm fairly sure that none of the HDD/DVD recorders have that facility. Your best chance for good DVD picture quality is to look for a recorder that can 'upscale' a standard DVD, try looking at Sony, Panasonic etc, but they'll be dear. (£300+)

Aren't there two different formats that are battling out this issue? HD-DVD and Blue-Ray. It's just like the old VHS and Beta battle. Beta was of higher quality, but VHS ended up winning. I'd like to see HD-DVD win, but it looks like Blue-Ray might win. I don't know. I do remember still seeing beta decks in production studios.
