Are DVD recorders as reliable as VCR's?

I know I can buy a combo DVD R/VCR. Can two single units of each be connected to the same television?

  • My stand alone VCR unit broke. I need another but I want to upgrade to DVD recording. I would love a combo unit that has both, but the over $200 price tag is kind of out of reach for me at the present, due to replacing my all-in-one-printer. Since dvd recorders have become the norm, prices for some models have fell. VCRs have drastically fell, some as much as $30. I was wondering if I could get two stand alone units and connect them to the same television? I know it sounds...well...hokey, but one must improvise every once in a while. I would appreciate any help that can be provided. Thank you.

I believe you can hook up the vcr old scool style with a regular female/male style cablethat you screw onto the ant/in thing on the back of the tv and the dvd can be hooked up separately with an s-connector or the tricolor (red, white, yellow)av plugs. (dont know all the technical names)

If you don't have the ability to hook separate components directly into your TV, (i.e., your TV has only one input) you can use a video switcher. $20 at Radio Shack. Here's a link: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049645&cp=&origkw=video+switch&kw=video+switch&parentPage=search You can probaly find a cheaper A/B switch if you look around.

Yea they have those. My mother and my mother-in-law has one. They should not go over $200. Its built together and can be attached to one TV. You should be able to find it almost anywhere. I recommend Walmart or Target. Good luck

Yes, you can connect multiple devices to the same TV. Your instruction booklet that came with your TV or either device should show you how to set it up.

Yes you can hookup individual units. Does your tv have multiple a/v inputs? If so, connect each device directly to your tv. If your tv just has a coax input, you can get what's called an rf modulator. Then you can hookup the a/v outputs from the new vcr to the modulator and the coax to the tv...
