Can you transfer from a dvr to a computer?

Is there a way I can transfer my shows from my DVR to my computer or a usb?

I have a Time Warner Cable box, and I also have dvr i can record many shows to it. Unfortunately, in my house everybody records a lot of shows and most of the time we don't want to erase them because we want to watch it again and again. It's taking up a lot of space and I want to know if there is any way i can transfer them to my laptop or a dvd or a usb. I don't want to go to a website to watch them or anything because that's to complicated for me. It has the plug to plug in a usb like it fits, I'm bad at this stuff so I don't know how else to explain. PLZ HELP

Not really. Dish Network will let you add a hard drive but it will only work with their system.
