DVD-R allows the data to be written on the DVD. once it is written.. the disk is closed.. and you can never add anything else to it. DVD-RW means the disk can stay open.. the data can be re-written over and over again.

DVD-R once you write to them it is permanent, just like CD-R's DVD-RW are re-writeable. You can erase what you have on the disk and record something else.

A DVD-R (writable) means it can only be written on once. A DVD-RW (Re-writable) can be written on, deleted and rewritten on up to 1000 times. It's kind of like a memory stick it can be used over and over. DVD's are normally used for movies etc and cd's are normally used for things like music, pictures etc. DVD's hold more then cd's do.
