How do I make my VCR/DVD work with my TiVo?

Can a TIVO record live TV? TIVO vs. Satellite?

  • We now have a Dish Network DVR, which I ABSOLUTELY love because it is so... easy to "pause" live TV and rewind live TV if you missed something. I also love how easy it is to record with the DVR. We are getting to ready to move, and I'm reviewing all of my options for new utilities. I can't make up my mind if I should move my satellite dish service with us, get cable, or what. Does TIVO work with regular cable, or does it need to be digital cable? Does TIVO let you pause and rewind live TV like a DVR does? Is TIVO basically a digital recorder only?

  • Answer:

Yes Tivo works like your DVR and more. Tivo is the company that basically started the record or rewind Live TV. They are the one that owns most of the patents for the way DVR's work. Cable works with Regular Cable, Digital Cable, Free to air, and an antenna on your roof. Tivo also lets you do things your cables company dvr does not. Have you ever wanted to be able to record your Shows/Movies off your DVR other than recording it to a VCR. How about Tivo being able to connect to your computers home network, so you can transfer a movie/show file over the network to a PC so you can edit and burn the show/movie to DVD .. Once you have it on your network you can access your Tivo from any location so you can schedule the recordings from any location with an internet connection. So if you are at work and not going to get home in time to setup that new season priemiere you can access your Tivo from work and not miss that show. Also if you ever get more than one Tivo and connect them to your homes network you can use MRV MultiRoom Viewing, which allows you to transfer a show from one Tivo where you have a show already recorded to your to the one your sitting in front of. I hope this helps. I have 5 Tivo's that are networked, have MRV and HMO. I LOVE TIVO..

Yes, TiVo does all of that. We just got Dish network with DVR and previously had 2 TiVos for the last few years. They are nearly identical, but I still miss the TiVo "Beep". LOL, I have two TiVo's sitting around unused, one of which has lifetime service. Interested??

Hi siebertclan, TiVo works with regular or digital cable and you can pause live TV. TiVo is a DVR. I prefer TiVO because of simplicity of use. Their schedule is always correct because it is updated every day. I can program TiVO to record from out of town over the Internet. TiVO learns what you like and recommends shows that you might like. Often times we never would have known they were on. You can program an entire season of a given series with a single click and TiVO never forgets. You can tell TiVO you like someone or something and it will locate shows for you. For example if you tell it you like John Wayne it will watch for and record anything he is on. I could go on and on about TiVO. There is one downside and that is the monthly (you can pay yearly if you want) fee.
