There are DVRs like TiVo or like the ones you might receive from your local cable company. But are there any DVRs for purchase either online or at a store that you are able to program to record TV, has some disk space to store multiple recordings, and doesnt come with subcription fee or rental fee?

Answer:
If you get product lifetime service from Tivo, there are no monthly fees or rental charges.

You can rent them from your cable company or you can buy a TiVo. There's also a nifty piece of hardware I know about for your computer where you can connect your PC to cable, then when another piece of software you can record it. That's pretty complicated though. I know a DVR from Comcast ranges from $11.95/month to $19.95/month and normally includes HD service, in most areas.
