Upgrading to Sky Hd, Can i use old Sky+ box in bedroom?
-
We just have a TV with channels 1-5 in bedroom so we would like to use the Sky+ box as a freeview receiver. Do we just connect the box to our TV so it can pick up the free channels? Which channels will we get? I believe the engineer will use our old card in the new HD box so we wont have a card to use, do we need one? We wont be able to use the record function will we? Thanks

Answer:
If you haven't already got one the Sky engineer will fit a Quad LNB,2 ports will be for the twin satellite cable for your Sky + HD box but you'll also need single satellite cable from 1 of the other 2 spare ports on the LNB to the Sky + box in the bedroom. You won't be able to use the Sky + Rec/FF/Rwind or pause functions, the cost to continue using these functions is £10.25 p/m, For a one off fee of £25 to Sky you can get a Sky Freesat card which will give access to 240 channels http://www.sky.com/shop/tv/free-to-air-channels/ Freesat From Sky FAQ's http://www.sky.com/shop/freesat/home/faq/#6

You dont need the card to recieve freeview channels( I dont have one) Im pretty sure you will be able to record on it still and aslong as you connect it to the satilite via a cable to the wall it should be fine :)

It will need to be connected to the satellite dish to pick up a signal. You'll get much the same channels as freeview, but on freesat. You will probably need a freesat card, which you can get for a one off payment of £20 from Sky. You won't be able to record. you need a Sky+ HD subscription to activate the record function (unfortunately). It might work for a while, but they change the channel frequencies sometimes and line up so if you don't have a card your box wont update and you'll lose channels. It's a one off payment, and that keeps your box updated for life. It's best to make the payment than find out you've lost channels one day in the future.

You can, but you will need separate cable(s) from your dish. If you have a quad LNB fitted, you will have 2 (necessary) connections available for Sky HD, and 2 for Freesat. Freview is terrestrial reception, and not compatible with satellite equipment. http://www.switchhelp.co.uk/digitaltv.html http://www.satcure.co.uk/tech/page10.htm

You can use it as a Free-sat not a freeview box but you will need a second dish or a Quad LNB on the one you have got.
