    TiVo is both a DVR (hardware) and a service. But not all DVRs are TiVos. http://www.tivo.com/ The DirecTV DVRs listed on the DirecTV web site are NOT TiVos, they are DirecTVs own brand of DVRs. I've not heard great things about these DVRs in the forums. However, this HD DVR does not support the new MPEG-4 video channels from the DirecTV satellite that DirecTV launched into orbit last year. So you'll need the DirecTV DVR (non TiVo) to receive those channels. http://www.weaknees.com/hd-tivo.php DirecTV DVRs have built in satellite tuners. "Plain" TiVos do not have a built-in satellite tuner and so require an external satellite box to tune in satellite programs. The DirecTV TiVo does have a built-in satellite tuner. DirecTV TiVos do not support all of the TiVo services. For instance, DirecTV TiVos do not support TiVoToGo for transfering shows to your PC for transfer to a portable media device, viewing on your PC or laptop, or burning to DVD. You can still burn shows to a DVD but you have to record the video to DVD with a DVD recorder.

there's no difference in the two. Yes tivo can be used with directv

Tivo is actually the service itself. You can have a DVR, but you need the service in order for it to actually work, to record programming, etc. Think of it as a car without gasoline. Nice, but without the gasoline/Tivo service, it's really no good to anyone.
