How do I connect my TV to cable?

Does anyone knows how to connect cable TV to the computer without using the cable box?

  • I have the subscription with Insight cable provider and the DVR box. What I would like to do is to send the cable signal to the computer via some appropriate TV tuner card without utilizing the cable box. Does anyone know is this possible or I have to use cable box to send the signal to computer? If I need to have the cable box connected to the computer via TV tuner, will I be able to watch/record different channels while the cable box is sending some different channel to the TV? Thanks for the help!

  • Answer:

Depends on your cable company and your settop box. Your cable company has allowed your settop to receive digital content and watch and record it on your PVR box... not on your PC. The signals come in encrypted and only your settop box can decode them (the stuff worth recording at least) That being said, you CAN hook up the coax output of your box to your TV tuner card (put it in channel 3) and view/record low quality output on your PC. Another option is to get a graphics card with VIVO capabilities, these have a way of taking in S-VIDEO or composite and capture/displaying the content... higher quality is possible, but it's very expensive, hokey and illegal

If your computer has a video card in it that is equipped with a tv tuner than you can simply take a coaxial cable and screw it onto the tuner. With out the box you won't get the digital channels though. I have a Sony Vaio and that is how I watch and record tv. You will still need to have some sort of program that can connect to that signal in the computer and record it. My software is called Gigapocket, which is sony. You will probably need software or another box of some sort to watch one channel and record another.

The TV Tuner acts liike a cablle box but you'll only gget anolog cable TV. You can hook up the cble box to the TV Tuner and change the TV Tuner card tto channel 3..

YES, there is a great way, Get the Elgato System Easy Eye TV. This is a DVR system that connects a cable to the device, then runs a USB cord to your computer. You can watch live TV through your computer with NO delay AND you can program shows to record while you are out. The shows can even be uploaded to a Video iPod. The best thing is there is NO monthly subscription, unlike Tivo and others that are $20+ per month. The systems are around $150 or $200 depending on what model you want. It would basically pay for itself within a few months. If you have an Apple Computer, this is THE system to purchase. i will be getting the Elgato system (Elgato 250), which is due to be released late August. Best of luck man.

You wont be able to get the digital services as you would with the box like the digital music, pay per view, Video on Demand, and any type of premium service or packs, the signal is encoded. However, you can get analog cable through your PC just like what the others have said.
