Answer:
TiVo is a digital video recorder (DVR) that is way easier to program than a VCR. Instead of using tapes, the DVR records to a hard disk drive like you have in your computer. This allows you to store 40 hours, 80 hours, and potentially hundreds of hours of TV shows on your TiVo (with a modified TiVo). To record a favorite show, just enter the name of the program you want to record thru an easy onscreen interface and then click record. Better yet, if you have a series you like to watch, you have the option of recording a "Season Pass" to ensure recording of all episodes -- even if they change time, have a two hour special, or change day or night of the week! If you go on vacation, you can have the TiVo save the episodes so you can watch them when you come back. Another great thing about TiVo is that you don't have to wait until the show is finished recording before you can watch it (like on a VCR). Say you are out for dinner or putting the kids to bed or talking on the phone. Just start watching the show when you feel like. You could only be 15 minutes into the show recording and start watching it. TiVo basically puts your viewing schedule into your hands rather than in the hands of the broadcasters. Another cool thing is if you are channel surfing and stumble across a show, you can just start recording it by pressing the record button. Late at night, this can be useful because you can just go to bed. Or if you fell asleep, you can rewind to where you fell asleep and continue watching. And you don't have to worry that you "ran out of tape". TiVo will just automagically delete your oldest shows when it's disk is full. And it'll automagically stop recording the show when it is done. Yes, you can record TV on a PC, but unless you buy a PC that has that capability built in ($1000 or more) or assemble the hardware and software yourself (are you a computer geek?) these DIY solutions are cumbersome, not as easy as TiVo, and usually end up costing more than a TiVo and it's monthly service fee. If you have cable TV service, cable companies also offer DVR service in many areas. The DVRs are not as easy to use or as full featured as TiVo but they get the job done -- mostly. Just one thing to note -- TiVo is only offered for sale and service in the United States.

You MUST buy a TIVO, i don't know how I ever lived without it. They are so cheap now, you can get them for $50 when they are on sale.

There are cards available for computers that will receive TV stations, and there is computer software that can record programs on the computer's hard drive like a TiVo does. This usually goes under the designation of Home Theater PC, or HTPC. You can search for these cards, but unless you are comfortable working with the insides of a PC, you will need help in getting it set up. Google HTPC and see what you get.
