DVD format is VOB. You may try this disc creator, it can help you burn photos, songs, video and ISO files to DVD. My friends recommend it to me, it's easy to use and works pretty well for me http://www.freedvdripper.net/software/avs-disc-creator.html Hope it helps. Contact me if you have any other question.
Oh, I know the reason why you can't play your burned dvd in your DVD player, because you just burned a data dvd from your mp4 format file(directly burn mp4 format file onto a DVD+R disk without convert to right format), so you can't play it on your DVD player, you should note, most DVD players only recognize standard video DVD well, so if you want to play the burned dvd in your DVD player, you have to use a right software to convert and burn your mp4 format file to a standard video DVD, you can follow me to use RZ DVD Creator, it can convert any format video files to standard video dvd and burn to any dvd disk(DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc), easy to use, insert your DVD+R disk into your computer dvd burner drive, run RZ DVD Creator, select your dvd burner drive as target folder, then drag and drop your mp4 format file into the software, at last press START button, you will get a standard video DVD from your mp4 format files, and you can play the burned standard video DVD well on your DVD player. You can yahoo or google search and download RZ DVD Creator, hope it can help you too.

Some DVD players only reay DVD-R discs not DVD+R discs, so I don't think it's the format, it might be the disc. Also, did you just burn the file with a normal burner or did you use a DVD burner that converts the file to a .vob that DVD's come in? Because if not then you should try Convert X to DVD because it will make virtually anything playable.
