DVR use with basic cable?

Can I use a stand alone DVR with basic cable?

  • I'm in college and we only get basic cable (nothing digital that I know of). I'm thinking about buying a combo dvd-dvr player (if such a thing is possible) but I don't know if it'll work with my colleges cable service. What do you think?

  • Answer:

Hello, I currently own a Tivo Series 2 DVR and I have basic cable (not Digital). I have no problems using it and if you have a computer, you can connect your Tivo Series 2 to it and have it use your internet connect to get the program listings (instead of using a standard phone line). Also once connected to your computer, you can listen to your music or view photos through you Tivo.

You might want to check with your college Telecommunications Department and the Cable company. I was wondering this same thing when I discovered I could just call the cable company and order one, then they just charge me for what I ordered and they charge the school for what they pay for. Also from what I understand DVRs requires digital cable, at least the ones from the cable companies. One option is if you have a computer with a decent sized hard drive and a fast enough processor you can get a DVR for your computer. Some of these though have bad quality, and also you can only watch it on your computer monitor, unless you have a TV out port. One plus of this though is that you can burn to DVD easily.
