Answer:
Hi Wolfeden There is little difference between the Directv and Dish Network, but I feel that Dish Network is slightly better value for money. It is a little bit cheaper than Directv and also has a larger dish which makes the reception potentially better at times. Directv does offer Sunday NFL though, if that is a main interest. Either way, you should get a good deal. http://www.sattvinfo.com/dishdirectcompare.html has some useful information for comparisons between Dish Network and Directv.

Dish Network starts at a cheaper rate of $19.99, and you get a free gift when you sign up. iPod Shuffle, Home Theater System, or portable DVD Player. Check out http://www.dishnetworkoffers.net

From a picture quality they are BOTH better than cable and if the weather is effecting your dish as often as the poster above then they better tighten some clamps or something on that dish. I live in the South which is prone to T storms and I can still count on one hand the number of times I've lost signal due to the weather. It has to be raining EXREMELY hard to lose your signal and as soon as the rain lessens the signal returns. As far as which is better between the 2 I have to say DirectTV. I have been a customer for 7 years now and have had NO issues whatsoever. They're customer service is outstanding and the wait time is nil. They are also the exclusive provider of NFL Ticket where you get all the games in HD every Sunday and they just added like 25 more HD Channels to the ones they already had for a total of 42. They will have 100 by the end of the year. They may be a little more expensive than dish but it is well worth it unless you could care less about HD and Sports, weeder

it depends on what your specific needs and wants are. Overall, customers prefer DirecTV, as evidenced by the number of customers with service with either company. DirecTV also has some alluring programming as they just rolled out a large number of HD channels as well as continuing to offer exclusive programming such as the NFL Sunday Ticket. Dish offers locals in most if not all markets. DirecTV is still working out agreements in some local markets as the FCC has harsh penalties for offering local affiliates programming without their permission. If you can't get locals, you get a discounted package price (and may be eligible for network affiliates from LA or NY). Most pricing is the same between the companies except for the base packaging, for which Dish is better priced. As for customer service, I've heard from technicians and customers that DirecTV, though there are still some horrors of customer service there, provides substantially better service. The links I've given are for both companies customer agreements, which I've read and found to be very similar. The only difference is the price with the fees listed. Keep in mind that some of the fees that DirecTV says they may charge ("as much as x amount or the maximum amount permitted by law" doesn't mean that's what is really charged), though, are higher than they actually charge. On an additional note, culvex, I recommend you call the company and do some troubleshooting. If it's a signal issue resulting in a "Searching for Satellite Signal" or SFSS (a.k.a. OSD or extension 771) you may need to have a technician come out to tighten/realign/relocate your dish for a more reliable signal. You may be charged $70 for a service call, but remember that the company pays a lot more than you do to have a certified technician (as in if they f* up then DirecTV will send another one at no additional cost) come out to do that. I recommend opting for the Protection Plan as it will significantly reduce the cost of such occurrences ($5.99/mo =$71.88 whereas one service call with a receiver replacement=$89.95 and there is no limit on service calls or receiver replacements)
