How do I hook up an external hard drive to a DVR?

How do I transfer recorded programs from my Dish Network DVR to an external hard drive?

  • I have a Dish Network DVR. It has a USB port in the back of it. I tried to hook an external hard drive to it but nothing happened. I went to the menu on my TV and pressed on Multimedia. It said that there was nothing connected to my television. I read something about a $40 fee or something but I'm not sure what that's about. I'd appreciate it if you could help me out. ~Brittany

  • Answer:

You connect your external hard drive EHD to the usb port on the back of your receiver. It must have external power (can't be powered through the usb port). Then call Dish and they will authorize it and charge your account $40.00. If you have additional DVR's they will all be able to use the EHD.

Usb ports on dvrs are for future use only. You have to connect the external hard drive to Line one output to send the shows to the ehd.
