Why won't my TIVO connect to my phone line?

Is there a way to have a DVR without a land phone line?

  • I have DirecTV satellite TV. I have wireless internet at home, but I only use my cell phone; I have no land phone line connection at my house. I want to get a TiVO or DVR, but everyone I find requires a landline connection. Is there a way to connect it to the internet wirelessly or to use my cell phone to get the system to update instead of a landline?

  • Answer:

The DirecTV DVR has a system in place so that you can view the programing guide up to two weeks in advance. For that to work, you need the phone line attached. But, without the phone line, you will still get the guide the way you normally do on the regular receiver. Also, in order to order PPV without having to call in or go online, you have to have a phone line connected. But you can order online or over the phone. They have extra features that require the use of the phone line, however they are just that. Extra features. Your DVR will work just fine without the phone line. I have two, one is connected to a phone line the other isn't. They both work just fine.

I used to have TIVO and used a wireless USB device to connect to the wireless network at my house. worked very well. I think i bought the USB device at Best Buy for around $40. Good luck!

i have one and do not have home phone. all they want you to have a phone for is to record programs for you that THEY think you will like so to answer your question, yes you can and it will work just fine. i have recorded this last season of 24, prison break, csi las vegas, new york, and miami.

I don't have DirecTV but I have Time Warner and it's DVR, and that connects right through the cable line.

You would have to check with the TiVO or DVR retailers. My son has XBOX that is wireless, but he had to buy a wireless adapter to make it work. You might just have to buy a fitting to your TiVO or DVR that is a wireless adapter. good luck

I recommend getting a DVR where you don't have to pay a monthly fee. Just go to your local electronics store, they have them. Of course, they cost more since you don't have to pay a monthly fee but in the long run it's worth it and it will save you money. The reason TiVos and related DVR's require you hook up a phone line is so they can shut off your service if you don't pay your bill. Pretty Simple. Hope this helps, and Good Luck! :)
