Where to find a cheap DVR for DirecTV?

Where can I find a stand alone DVR?

  • I want a DVR w/ a hard drive, not one that records onto dvd's. I do NOT want one from Tivo, DirecTv, or my cable company! But I would like one that has some kind of basic guide to record from. It would also be good if it could record 2 shows at once and record to VHS (through VCR) capabilities. Also, do all dvr's record live tv to pause and rewind? I heard that Sony and Panasonic make good models, but their websites were no help. I've been searching online (and on here for answers) and I can't find ANY that fit my needs. PLEASE HELP!

    Uhhhhhhhhh, just buy a Tivo. It is the only one that does everything you want it to do and does it well. The new Series 3 will have dual tuners withoutput to a VCR or DVD recorder.

Well a DVR is just a Digital Video Recorder and uses a hard drive as the recording medium. Now as far as I've seen you can only get them through your cable and satellite companies without the burner or DVD burners with a built in hard drive. Now the latter offers free basic service (Tivo or TV Guide Plus), depending on the company and it's usually stated in the models features. Yes, you can pause all DVR's from 1/2 hr to an hour from the ones I've used. Those are the only options I believe you have and it's just boils down to what you like and can afford. But if you're going to record to VHS you might as well save your money and buy a good VCR instead of hooking up a DVR to a VCR. Good Luck.
