Can I have directv and dish network?

Thinking abt switching from DirecTV to Dish Network. Can I use the same receivers/TiVOs?

  • I have two Hughes TiVO that I love, both with dual inputs. They say DirecTV on them , but I think they are just Hughes DVRs. Some sales person said Disk Network requires you to use their own receivers/DRVs. Anyone know the REAL answer?

  • Answer:

They are not interchangable. you'll need Dish Network's equipment. The 2 main reasons, in case you wondered why, are: DirectTV uses an MPEG2 variant while Dish uses straight MPEG2 DirecTV is protected by Videoguard, while Dish uses Nagravision

I have dish network and I do know that you must use their equipment because of what they call the smart cards. I changed from Direct and asked the same question. A word of caution--buy your dish network equipment outright and don't sign a contract. My friend got behind on her monthly payment because of being in the hospital during pregnancy and they charged her credit card almost $900 and wouldn't consider the circumstances. Also customer service leaves a lot to be desired.
