Can I buy TIVO from a store and use with my tv (no dish/cable service)?

Answer:
technically yes. you could purchase a Tivo, bring it home hook it up, and record hour upon hour of a blank screen. you would even be able to Pause, rewind, and slo-mo your blank screen. My point is, yes you could, but it would be pointless. my reccomendation: Get DirecTV, forget TiVo, the DTV R-20 is way better, less expensive, and if in the event you need a replacement Reciever, you will get an R-20 anyway. the subscription for an r-20 is far less than a Tivo, and that money could be better spent on the protection plan, which will give you a *Free* replacement reciever if anything goes bad. *and by free, i mean free provided you did not do anything malicious to your reciever, and completed troubleshooting steps with the rep.
