Can I use a Directv DVR if I don't have a phone line at home?

Answer:
assuming you've got a Hughes or RCA DirecTV DVR powered by Tivo, for the first time guided setup, you'll need to connect to a phone line to complete it. luckily, you don't have to do this from your home. you can take the unit to a friend's house to go thru the 1st time setup process, filling out all the info with your own. i'm not 100% sure, but i think part of the guided setup is determining the channels you get. i think you have to indiciate that you have satellite. it might be best if you choose a friend with DirecTV to do the guided setup. once that's completed, you don't even need to have the phone line connected (unless you want to order PPV via remote), but you'll have to deal with the daily messages reminding you that you haven't called in a long time. you should note that the DirecTivo nuit doesn't have the USB ports active (even though they're there) so you won't be able to wirelessly connect it to your network without hacking it. only the standalone Series 2 Tivos have the USB ports active out of the box. if you want to hack the DirecTV box to activate the USB ports, hit that 3rd link below.

Yes, you can use Directv DVR, but you won't be able to get software updates without a phone line. Also, the wireless option Tivo offers is not offered by Directv (nor are any other newer features, not since Directv announced at CES 2005 that they were developing their own DVR - Tivo doesn't love them anymore!).

Yes, but you will not be able to order PPV via remote and you may get your account flagged by DirecTV if they have not seen it call in for a while. All guide and program scheduling comes down via the satellite. Oops - didn't see your request about dialing in via the internet. If you have the Hughes unit, you will have to hack it to accept any kind of internet connection. It's doable and documented if you search the right forums.
