How do I change my wireless password on Linksys router?

Help configuring a Netgear dg834gt 108mbps super wireless adsl router with a Linksys WAP54G wireless access?

  • Hi, I am reallly realy new to this. My access point is connected to the router (Netgear). 1 other computer is also connected to this router. In terms of producing a signal and accessing the internet via the wireless point, there is no problem. However, i just cannot seem to access the in built web configuration utility on the Linksys access point. Currently the wireless network is unsecured as a result of there being no access to set up the necessary security procedures. In the documentation etc. the default address for the WAP54G point is 192.168.1.245. Typing this ip address into any web browsers on any computer on the whole network (both hardwired computers and wireless) brings no result. The Linksys CD recognises and picks up the wireless router. When i try to change settings via this CD software i cannot access the router because any password I try doesnt work. I have seen people say change ip address of router, but I am too new to this to understand. Please help!

You will find that the address your pc has is not compatible with the one on the wireless access point. It works like this: The netgear router will be something like 192.168.0.1 so it will give addresses after that. Your pc will be something like 192.168.0.2,. which is the next available address. The linksys WAP only passes all network traffic around, it does not need to be able to chat to your pc via an ip address to work. To resolve this, you need to assign your pc an ip address on the same range as your linksys thingy. Click on start, control panel, network connections. Double click the wireless network and press properties. Double click internet protocol and choose use the following. In the boxes, make sure you assign like this: 192.168.1.200 255.255.255.0 Don't worry about the other boxes. Next, open a browser and try the 192.168.1.245. It should work. When you have done what you gotta do, get back to the internet settings thing and select the obtain option for both bits on that page (one for IP and one for DNS) That is it!!

Hi, I have the DG834G, model down from yours with a belkin wireless gaming adapter similar sort of set up to you. In order to use the linksys adapter you need to know how to configure your router. Firstly go to wireless settings on your router. Type in a name for your SSID, for example home or whatever you want it to be. In wireless access point tick 'enable wireless access point, bradcast name of SSID. Click on set up access list and add manually your adapter by its mac addresses. Tick turn access control on and click apply at bottom of screen. If you don't know the mac address click on attached devices and make a note of all the the mac addresses listed. These will be all of the items attached to your network. Next plug your linksys in to your router with a spare ethernet cable. Click on attached devices again and you will have an extra item, the linksys. Make a note of the mac address and add it as mentioned above. Now while your linksys is plugged into your router you should be able to access it through your web browser by typing in the default 192.168.0.254 Please note that this is right at the end of the range of your router. You probably have to enter a default name and password for the linksys. When in the config settings enter your SSID. Your default gateway (netgear router) is 192.168.0.1 If it ask you if your network is infrastructure this should be ticked. Make sure channel number is same as in your wireless settings of the router. I set mine to 9. WEP encryption and network key at this stage are disabled or not entered. You can add this later. Authentication mode should be open+shared. IP config should be set to automatic. Thats it. What they don't tell you is that any wireless adapter, gaming adapter needs to configured WIRED first as its easiest way to do it. If it don't work wired you haven't got any chance of getting it done wireless I can't help you much more on the linksys as I don't have one but if you want to know anything about the settings on your router drop me an email. Just in case you are worried about security don't be. Providing your turn access control on and restrict by mac address in your trusted stations only YOUR hardware can access your internet. Hope this helps

firstly configure your wireless access point as the same network as the router i.e first connect to the WI-Fi point direct assign it an address like 192.168.1.5, subnet will be 255.255.255.0, disable DHCP on this device because i think it probably conflicting with your router , if it has a configuration for DNS check you router and add these addresses in the WIFI the default gateway should be set to the router's IP address 192.168.1.1 i presume on the router add a reservation and this will be 192.168.1.5 open the following ports on the access point if the device supports it 67,68 port 445 and port 7 do this on the Access points i doubt this will be necessary
