How to change my ip address on my macbook?

Will my ISP accept this as a valid reason to change my fixed dynamic IP address?

  • Every time I ask this question I get one of the following responses, so please please try to avoid answering with them because I have it up to here with people not answering this question: 1. "you can manually change your IP address" -- no I can't. My IP address is decided by my ISP through some DHCP or whatever. Please no suggestions as to how I can change it from home. They won't work. 2. "why do you want to change your IP address?" I can assure you (and my ISP) that there is not one website out there that has my IP address banned. I am not a gamer, or seller, or whatever it is that gets most people banned from websites. Please don't find this request sketchy on my part. I only need to convince my ISP, not people here on Y!A. Okay so on to the reason: The IP address they have assigned me, though dynamic, takes a long time to change. It's a fixed dynamic IP address. I want to call them to change it prematurely. I've had it for 6 months now. The reason is that for some reason, this IP address is on a SPAM blacklist causing some of my VERY important emails sent to some domain's spam box--causing the recipient to never get the email (unless they regularly check their spam boxes). Would my ISP be willing to help me out? Or should I just switch to a new ISP? I don't mind doing the latter, whichever helps my predicament. It's Charter Communications if that helps any...they work just like Comcast.

Well you can call them up and tell them, it may or may not do any good. I would just be honest as to your reason. Getting a static IP from your isp is another answer. You have more of a business account then and they are willing to help more, because you are paying a little extra for the static. Switching ISP's probably won't help you. Cause it sounds like your running a mail server from your home to me, and most DHCP accounts with ISP's really dont like that. There are black lists created for DHCP ranges of ISP's, these blacklists prevent spammers from doing what you are doing. ie they grab a dhcp address send out a ton of spam, then renew the ip to get another address and repeat. Legitimate mail admins have caught onto this and usually subscribe to a blacklist that contains DHCP ranges from ISP's. Why won't switching an ISP and therefor your IP address help. Because most ISP's do not allow outgoing email from there DHCP (ie basic home subscribers) customers, they force outgoing email through there servers. However you can recieve your email from anywhere. This ties down spammers again from there networks. I have a DHCP account and wished to send email from my external server, ie a hosted email provider, so I called ATT and told them, Hey I have an external email server I wish to send email from, could you open up this one address for me to send email to so I can use this, they said yes and now I send email from my att account and my private server. Hope this helps.

"Fixed dynamic IP address" is an oxymoron. If an IP address is fixed, then it is not dynamic. If an IP address is dynamic, then it is not fixed. Beware that dynamic IP address ranges are flagged as those that should not be acting as SMTP servers and MANY SMTP servers will automatically reject email from dynamic IP addresses (yes there are lists of IP addresses that are known to be dynamic IP addresses). You will NEVER be able to get around this kind of rejection with any dynamic IP addressed SMTP server. If you really want to run your own SMTP server, then you're going to have to use your ISP's SMTP server as a "smart host" for your SMTP server or you're going to have to pony-up for a truly static IP address for your business. P.S.: Another reason why you're IP is blacklisted may be that your system is hijacked by spammers and it is spewing-forth oodles of spam without your knowledge. You might want to double-check that none of your machines is hijacked by malware.

Call them and tell them the truth. Or you can tell them that you suspect someone has your IP and is using it illegally. If they won't help then change over to a new ISP. I have no problem with my DSL, except for the fact that I can only get 6 megs speed. It sounds like you've tried ipconfig /release and /renew already.
