Is Wifi hotspot really different form repeater?

Wifi repeaters... I live just outside a public libraries Wifi hotspot...?

  • I've never set up a wifi repeater before, if I set up an antenna that can catch the libraries signal, and connect it to a repeater, will it automatically repeat (enhance the signal)? how will it know which signal to use? Will I need to access their system to be operational, or would it merely enhance their already present and unlocked signal? Is there a better way to connect a desktop and a laptop to a just out of range WiFi source?

  • Answer:

Where would you put the antenna and/or repeater? You can't put it outside unless you buy an industrial strength (i.e. weatherproof) one. And then you'd need a power source and the right of way to mount it on something. You can't put it just inside your house unless the signal strength is fairly strong. The repeater itself cannot pull in a signal any better than your computer can. Assuming you get past all this somehow, you will configure the repeater for which signal (SSID) to repeat. If successful, it will simply extend the existing signal, it will appear as if you're on the library WiFi, which you will be. The better way of course would be to buy Internet access from an ISP. Also you may want to look into the legality of your plan.

Depends in the security the library has in their set-up, but it could work, yes.
