Firstly, (Do it on both ends) Go to network and sharing centre. Go to adapter settings. Select properties of ethernet with which you want yo connect. select ipv4. Check "Use following IP Address". Enter some address like.. ( 192.168.1.15) at one end (In XP You'd find it under Network connection..in control panel...There is not much difference..You can figure out...) At other end type( 192.168.1.20) (Note that first 3 bytes should be same. "192.168.1") Then Share atleast one of your drives. Go to properties of any drive (D:,E:) Then, Under sharing. Do advanced sharing. Check share this drive. Under permissions.Select full control. (You can do it on both sides, to avoid confusion...In XP just check share.. n OK) Then type "Run" in search under window. Type..the IP of the machine you want to connect to. Like: \\192.168.1.20\\ It should open a window , which will be having the drives you shared on that computer.. Hope it works! Cheers

XP..is SP 3..now-a-days.. WIN 7 might be blocking that issue.. === XP..configures useing a Wizard.. WIN 7..useing network recognition-(its automatic)..same with Vista../ === The Wizard in XP--operates much better if you choose--OTHER,, ..when asked about a type of network.. Otherwise--the Windows[tm] Firewall will turn itself ON..blocking your attempts.. So--make sure that the WIN[tm] Firewall is turned-OFF../prior to starting the Wizard.. === If you go to the Device Manager--in XP.. You can create your Work Group name.. ..also create a Desrcription../ === Also in WIN 7..use the Control Panel.. Choose..the System--catagory.. Create your Work Group--and Description.. === That should cover it.. The XP--Wizard is difficult.. ...and you may need the SP 3 update..for WIN 7 to accept the configuration.

it needs to pretend to log on to the xp system if you dont usually use a user name and password or you have forgotten it then start xp and create a new user, with a password and then hey presto you have one, just use that.
