How to know if a file has 'access' monitor in linux?

Just installed Linux Chakra and I like it! Questions though?

  • I've always heard about Linux running great/better on aging computers so I installed it on the Acer desktop that was going to be recycled. Feels like a new computer! (not helping my laptop, but it gave my desktop new life.) I'm still into windows, mostly because all my software are windows based. What about antivirus software? I mean I know Mac claims to be virus free but that's a lie. A tad confuse about linux being open sourced. And all these distros. What are they really? Based off of a diviant of linux and renamed and retooled by programers? I don't understand what Arch is or KDE. Do I have to deal with CMD? I do not like line commands. main concern right now is word doc and docx files. What do I use? I'm a tad concern about using different programs back and forth, can I shove office 2010 on to this somehow? For this computer that is the only windows prog. I need. With windows, you know how you go to my computer to access the c drive? how do I do this from here? Y'know if someone can tell me everything I need to know about Chakra Linux that would be great. the vga port got damaged due to a short of a faulty monitor. So I have a low profile gigabite video card........... What does this mean now that the computer is Linux??? Do I install the drivers? Kind of confuse of how Linux works compared to Windows.

  • Answer:

Great that U hav installed Linux Chakra ,it is like others (Viz Ubuntu,Fedora,Arch,Mint & so many Distributions of Linux(fondly called Distros)) lets deal with Ur query,U don't need MS-Office as openoffice (a free software)is fully compatible with MS-Office download it for Ur distro. Regarding your question about driver, most of the time Linux will configure all devices and rarely when you need to install driver by hand you can look for help in documentation(Help files also called Man Files). Regarding seeing all drives in Ur Pc U can go to any drive by clicking on places Regarding Anti virus U don't need one as a linux OS allows its own administrator to change any system file

Long time ago when I came to Unix (Linux and BSDs), I was in the same confusion, what is a distro, how to access different drives and how to make different Windows software run in Linux and most of all what is a desktop environment e.g. KDE, Gnome etc. With the passage of time you learn everything so no need to rush to learn everything. There are many software that can run using Wine but there are many that cannot. But there are many good alternatives to them. For example Libre office and Openoffice.org are alternatives to MS Office. Just search them on internet and how to install them in your distro. Regarding your question about driver, most of the time our Linux will configure all devices and rarely when you need to install driver by hand you can look for help in documentation.
