How to make my customers happy?

How much less will I make if I don't take on "business" customers?

  • I'm a decent PC technician, but I'm a slow learner. I've found that even the smallest business has almost zero tolerance for tech support that doesn't figure out how to fix their problems almost immediately. I'll get a service call requesting that I simply fix a slow computer, and when I get there, they also expect me to fix a label printer, fix their VPN, and get the QuickBooks file from their Mac to work on a PC. I don't know how to do these other things, and I've already tried risking breaking their stuff while learning....no good. So, how much less money will I make if I don't take on business customers?

    Your best bet would be to make it very clear that you are only there to fix their requested problem. Tell them that you are not prepared to fix other problems upon their request. Have something like a fix request form that they must fill out prior to you starting work. This will clearly define what you are there to fix so they can't pull the classic, "While you're here, can you fix...." And always be expanding the types of things that you can do. Take a few classes or just go get a book on it. That way when they want you to fix something you will be able to, once they schedule you to fix it.

Probably no less. Just specialize in what you know best, and do those things well. Tell them you dont know how to make quickbooks from a mac work on a PC. You will spend far less time making mistakes on things you dont know so you can concentrate on getting things right that you do know.
