Why does my wireless connection constantly go in and out when I am well within range of the router?
-
I have a HP dv4000 laptop, approx 2 years old. It has a wireless button and I have a dLink wireless router that is WAP protected. My computer connects fine to my signal from the router, and cruises along at 54 mbps according to windows wireless connection popups. after a few minutes, the light on my wireless button goes off and the speed on the display goes to either 36, 24, 18, 5.5, or 1 mbps. When this happens, i lose my wireless signal and can't surf the net. I have to press the wireless button to turn the wireless in the computer off, then immediately turn it back on, and it reconnects and goes back to 54 mbps. This happens every 3-4 minutes sometimes, making using the wireless very annoying. Does anyone know what is causing this? I am always within 25 feet of my router, so range is not an issue. Even when I am sitting at the desk right next to the router, the problem persists. I would love to fix this issue.

Answer:
It where the router is located. Get it up higher, and you will get a beter signal.

You need to check if your lapatop's wireless card is properly working or not. If you can get hold of a PCMCIA wireless card, try that, see if it is giving you the same problem.

Go to your router configuration (see the installation manual) and look for the dhcp page. Check that this has a lease time set to 28 days, I am seeing may set to a few hours or even minutes. If this does not work, change the channel and ssid of the router. You may have conflict with a nearby machine. I assume you have encryption, if not set it immediately.
