How to get a job with computer networking degree but no experience?

Is it hard to find a job in Computer Networking if you have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and no experience?

  • I was considering a Bachelors degree in Computer Networking but, I wanted to know some of the perks of getting a Bachelors degree in Computer Networking? If I got a Masters in Networking would it be hard to find a job with no experience with a GPA of 3.5 or higher? Everyone I know claims that it is really easy to get a job in Networking with all I just asked but, I thought I'd ask someone else. What do you all think? Is it worth it. I wanted to an internship but, that would be pretty hard to do considering I don't have a car and there is no public transportation around.

OK - there are a few different parts to your question so lets break it down. Get the BA, yes. Yes you need job experience IF you want a True Networking position as say just a job in the computer field, fixing or help desk. To answer the next part and discredit a little what you have been told: Go to Monster.com (or another job search engine) and put in the type (real type) of job. Then look at what the job qualification are. In most case a BA with x amount of experience is asked for. (Entry level is less experience and less pay). A masters will in most cases make you over educated and they will not want to pay the grade money for the job. Wait till you have worked in the field for a while than go back for your Masters. The 3.5 will be nice, but most HR people only know you have a degree, not your GPA. A BA is a BA and they skip over the the work experience column of the resume. Like all fields it is a bit crowded and a buyers market for the person hiring.

these days, employers want it all. they want the education, but they also want the experience to go with it. unfortunately, it really depends on where you live and where you're willing to move to. it's not always easy to find a networking job and even if you do, and they're willing to hire you, the start off pay isn't very good and if the company has any dealings overseas, then your job is at risk of being outsourced to another country where the pay is much much cheaper than it is here. i was told by a former employer it was easier to fire all of their current employees and yank new people with no experience off the street and train them b/c they'd be making half what most of us did. so if you're going to get a degree in networking, make sure you have a backup as well. it's not hard to have education classes - specifically vocational or high school - to become a teacher added as a second bachelor's. it can be difficult swinging both majors, but it's worth it to have a backup.
