  • Answer:

First make sure they physcally see each other. At each machine run ipconfig from a command prompt and note the IP address. From either machine go to a command prompt and Ping the other machine. If it responds, they see each other. If not, you have an IP or Firewall issue. In Windows 7 "network and sharing center" make sure that both machines have file and printer sharing and network discovery turned on. Make sure that they both belong to the same workgroup. The default name is WORKGROUP. You can test this by right clicking "network" in the file browser. You should see a workgroup named WORKGROUP with both machines in it. If none of that works you can drop to a command prompt and try to map a drive manually using the NET CONNECT command. It has error reporting ability that can help you pin down the problem if the command fails. You can google it but basically to map drive H: to a computer named BOB and with a share named FILES would be NET CONNECT H: \\BOB\FILES
