How to get the name of the currently connected WiFi network?

What info can a wifi network find on connected iPod´s ?

  • My school announced that they will track down and punish people using their (poorly) password protected wireless on iPods and phones. What info could they find when an iPod is connected to their wifi. Could they see the name of the iPod and hope it has a person's name in it? If I make sure I change the name would I be all right and not be caught? Could they monitor the certain data that goes in and out of a certain iPod (i check personal facebook and email on it at school) Any answers appreciated, I do not know much about wireless stuff.

  • Answer:

They can see the MAC address, the IP address that was assigned, the node to which you connected (your general location), the times you connected, and what internet sites you accessed. They can also see a device name but it seems to be pretty generic. I looked at my son's iPod on our router. And before you ask, yes its legal. They own the system and the internet connection so they can look at anything connected to it. The same is true of your employer when you get a job.
