How to design a secure network?

Why won't my PC connect to my own secure internet network?

  • In our household we have 3 computers: iMac, PC1 (XP), and PC2 (Vista). I have successfully set up the network to require a password for internet access. The iMac and PC1 have no trouble finding the network, asking for the password, and connecting once the correct password is entered. The problem is that the PC2 finds the network but says "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network". When I originally set up the router we didn't have a password requirement (unsecure network), and all three computers could access the network with no problems. After many recommendations to add the password, I decided it would be best, but I am having trouble. I don't want to go back to having an unsecure network, but we need PC2 to work. Does anybody know what settings I need to change in order for the PC2 to connect to our secure wireless network? Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

On PC2 (Vista), click on the Start button and type in "Manage Wireless Networks." (If the search doesn't find it, you can also go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Wireless Networks [on the left]). Find your network profile listed there and delete it. Next, add the wireless network again. Be sure that you input the correct security type and encryption type. If you don't know this, it will be configured on your wireless network's router. Make sure to check the box that says "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting." If you want it to connect to this connection everytime, check "Start this connection automatically." The connection should work once you try to connect.
