Can ethernet be used for both direct connect and network access?

Can I connect to wifi through an ethernet cable in my laptop?

  • I have a mac where the airport is now broken. I used to access the internet through my home wifi network which is still available. Am I able to put another ethernet cable into my laptop and use some device to connect to the wifi network? Is this expensive to set up? Is this my only option since my airport wireless doesn't work anymore? Otherwise I have to buy a portable internet USB which is expensive and allows little download.

  • Answer:

If you want your connection to be wireless(not exactly portable), you can probably connect another router to your ethernet port, and then set it up into bridge mode.

If your router has a LAN socket, then you can use that, otherwise you should be able to get a USB wireless dongle which will work with your existing wi-fi router - this does the same as the airport but via USB instead (I'm not talking about the type of dongle you have to have with a contract - all this does is pick up the wi-fi connection from your existing wi-fi router). If there is no LAN connector on the mac, you will need a USB to LAN connector (I picked one up cheap from eBay for the Wii - it's the same thing..) Otherwise get a working airport from eBay and replace the broken one

If you have a MacBook Air, you have to buy a USB-Ethernet Adapter. All "home Wi-Fi" boxes have an ethernet port. So the answer is "Yes".
