Why wont windows messenger connect?

Can't connect to microsoft sites even windows messenger?

I have 2 pc's running on XP, i networked them via Xcable. I installed 2 LAN cards to the 1st pc, the 1st lancard is for my broadband internet & the 2nd lancard is for network. My problem is that the 2nd pc cant connect to microsoft websites, i cant update my windows and my windows messenger wont work. I have no problem connecting to other websites just the microsoft sites. The 1st pc have no problem connecting to the internet or to any other websites. I can even update my windows and connect my windows messenger from the 1st pc. I can do file sharing, and even do network games for both computers. I cant really understand why my 2nd pc cant connect to microsoft websites. Contact me if you need more info? Thanks!
Answer:

Open a command prompt (Start | Run | cmd | OK) and type "ping update.microsoft.com" (w/o the quotes). What do you get ?
