How do I send a direct message on Twitter?

The drop down selection on twitter goes down, but there's nothing there, even though i am following people.

The people your following MUST be following you in order to send them a message. Pretty stupid, huh?! Have a great day or night, whatever it is where you are! LOL! =]

You can only send direct messages to people who have chosen to follow you - it is an anti-spam measure.

You need to make the person your following follow you. I had that same problem.
