What is the difference between a wireless N Router and a wireless G Router?

  • I want to get a wireless connection with my laptop and have a connection to the desktop as well, will choosing either one be a bad thing??? I already have internet access.

    The N protocol has a longer range than either of its own predecessors. B and G had an effective, unobstructed range of about 100 feet. N supposedly has a range of nearly 700 feet though in practice I've not achieved anywhere near that. Most N routers also have two aerials, allowing them to transmit a dual signal, which can give much faster reception rates on appropriate network cards. My Linksys wireless N router currently is on the second floor of the house, and actually serves machines two properties away, so it's still a good distance. All N routers have backwards compatibility with B and G so existing network cards and laptops will work fine with them, but if you have rangeboosted and speedboosted N equipment you will see a noticeable difference.

Those are the available 'bands'. Don't worry about the technical junk behind them, at the moment N has the ABILITY to be faster. Tests still prove the Wireless G by Linksys to perform better. I use that one and have a great wireless home signal. The technology behind the N band still causes too much interference.

While in theory Wireless N Routers are faster and have more range, they are more prone to interference at this time. Generally Wireless G Routers are more stable and less vulnerable to outside interference that will cause decrease in signal quality.
