First let's actually measure your download speed rather than assuming you know it is slow. Actual measurements can be real eye openers. Go to www.pcpitstop.com and follow the prompts to run a download test. Note the results. Now, disconnect (deactivate) the wireless so no one can access via wireless and link your pc as the one and only pc on the LAN and measure the speed again. If it is markedly faster than the initial measurement, the following are likely the problems and cures: 1. You have freeloaders hacking in on your wireless adn hogging your bandwidth. Use wireless security to the full extent including MAC address validation to remove hackers. 2. Your link from pc to wireless access point may be a problem. Wireless signal does not penetrate masonry, metal (e.g. ducts, mirrors) and other dense building materials. It will also poorly penetrate somewhat dense building materials. Speed drops with distance from the access point. Bring the pc and access point closer and measure speed to see if this helps. Do this AFTER you have implemented wireless security. Now if the initial 2 tests show no difference between the two tests AND the tests are substantially below the speed your ISP claims to provide you may have a problem with your router or your ISP. First remove the router entirely and connect via wired link your pc to the modem. Reboot both and measure. If the speed remains slower than promised, contact your ISP. If it is a lot faster without your router, your router may be defective; upgrade its firmware and keep it off line for a few hours to discourage freeloaders trying to enter and then measure again. If the router remains the problem you have a defective router. Use a logical process to identify the root cause and you will end up fixing it.

turn off computer, modem, and wireless router. unplug router for a full two minutes, as well as modem for another full two minutes. the plug in the MODEM first, and then the router. Start the computer back up and reinstall the wireless router's driver. If that doesn't solve the problem, you may have a fried cable in your router or some wear and tear in your burried cable. if that's what you suspect, contact your cable provider.

Nice to see that people are reading the question before answering - the guy has stated its a 384kbps device which should suggest that its not a standard wireless usb dongle. From what you have said it appears you have a mobile broadband usb adapter - which uses the cell phone network, usually on GPRS, 3G or HSDPA, and judging by the speed you have quoted its a 3G system, however dependant on where you are at the time the speed can be throttled down to GPRS speeds which is approximately the same speed as dial up - in some cases the GPRS speeds can be almost unusable. The reason for this throttling is because the current 'cell' you are in does not support 3G networks, so reverts to the older speed/technology. The speed is also highly dependant on the signal strength you are currently receiving which you should be able to view in the software you are using to connect. Therefore to speed up you either need to find a place where 3G works or move to a spot where you get better signal.

it could be that your pc is slowing down your internet - have you checked for spyware and viruses. this often happens to me. try avg antivirus and spybot s&d - they fix the problems for me. make sure you also dont have too many progs running in the background that connect to the internet : eg: multiple messaging apps, torrent downloaders, p2p's and other internet services.
