Mobile and other network connection knowledge…?

Friends I wanted to know that when there is an earth quake or any other natural calamities in one particular locality or city, why mobile phones sudden becomes switch off or network gets lost , and also internet also do not work.. does this really happen or just my imagination… how to contact family members then during this time…. Thanks

Answer:
There may be tower fault because of which you not able to contact to your family. There is only one way to contact then that is Radio Transmission. As it does not require high power to operate and even nature help in the transmission. But it has certain limitation.
