How to transfer files via Ad Hoc connection?

Can someone help me with ad hoc networking!?

  • I have my vista desktop computer and my XP laptop, they are connected through ad hoc and i was sharing internet connections just fine when someone restarted my desktop computer and screwed it all up!!! its not assigning the usual ip address or anything just one that looks like this : 169.254.X.X I have tried just about everything and i cannot figure out for the freakin life of me why it wont share the internet connection or files for that matter. and yes, all necessary boxes are checked and unchecked and all that basic stuff. this is something deeper that i cant figure out. ICS is on all of the settings are correct, i've went through every help site i could find, and windows help never helps. in depth details in troubleshooting would be amazing. thanks so much to anyone who answers!!! this might be a tuffy haha

  • Answer:

It seems that when someone restarted the desktop it lost the connection and something went wrong in that time frame which needs to be fixed now.......go thorugh the article where you can find the details that the IP address which it is assigning now is of no use for a connection http://ask-leo.com/why_cant_i_connect_with_a_169254xx_ip_address.html I would suggest you to delete the previous connections from both end and then re-create it..................remember to recreate it only after you restart both these systems.......

I wonder how only restarting a pc or abrupt power failure would not allow you to assign an ip address of ur choice. Are you sure some settings are not changed by the person, have you checked the security policies? You also said that files could not be transfered & internet could not be shared now that's contradictory earlier u said u can not assign ip now u say they r not connected. ok. i assume both situations. ip not assigned: if ur not able to assign any ip address, check ur protocol stack my ping 127.0.0.1 and see if replies come, if not try to reinstall driver of ur lan card. ip assigned but not connecting: maybe u have made two different networks with ur ip addressing scheme, check that. also check for any security policies. if ics is not working ru able to query ur modem? i guess it helps .........
