I have a network problem. My network is unidentified. What do i do to fix it?

I have an hp dv500 i believe with an atheros a/g/n wireless adapter built into it. In my basement, i have a linksys wireless n router and we have no password on our wireless network. it is unsecured. on my laptop, the wireless connection is a shared connection because i run an ethernet cable to my xbox 360 so i can play live. i dont know if this has to do with my problem. well basically heres the problem: its an off and on kinda of thing but i try to connect to my network and it says "Identifying" for a while and then it just says "unidentified". I dont know what this means but the icon is the bottom right task bar is just the two computer screens, and for me to have a connection it has to be the two computer screens with the globe. when there it is unidentified, i cant go on any websites and i dont know why. I have a strong connection by the way. im using windows vista. when i try to do the diagnose and repair thing, none of the options work, but every once in a while it does work, and thats how i fix it. bottom line, what is wrong with my connection and how can i fix it consistantly?

Answer:
u got vistya right well if u can can u go to control pannel and got to netork and internet and go to network sharing center then look on the click click on manage network and find local area connection then look for your local area connection right click and go to properties in the list go to ipv6 click properties and see what the ip address is and make sure its set to obtain ip address automatically if u see anything different let me know chances are u have a 169 ip address whioch is a default ip that the computer sees cause its not getting one from your modem and or router u would have to go in to the dos window right click select run as admin and do an ipconfig/release and it should turn to 0's (ip that is) then u should unplug eithernet cable and unplug your router (if u have one) then un plug modem and let sit got 30 seconds make sure u retart computer while either net is unplugged then plug modem back in make sure all lights come on (then routher if u have one) then plug back in eithernet cable into computer and see if u see in the bottom right hand corner and see if u see the connection established
