Is network system administration a good career?

Im currently pursuing a career in network administration and i was wondering newtwork admins of *yahoo*?

• what is the job like? is there anything that would help prepare me for this type of job? also entry level in this area i wouldnt expect to be allowed to touch the network immedeatly but what position should i be expecting to hold?

  If you really love it then pursue it, but know that it is a thankless job and will take years and perhaps shifting jobs from one company to another to finally get the position you want. Experience is worth more than someone new with an MCSE, but you should get your MCSE. Know that there are a bunch of idiots out there with MCSEs that when it comes down to it don't know how to apply their knowledge. Places like Microskills kick out hundreds of graduates every few months and all these people think that taking a class makes them network admins. You will be competing with a lot of people who think they know what they are doing. Today's employers want to get more for less so they expect a broader area of knowledge from their Admins. I recommend you get familiar with the following: -get your mcse -learn some linux (be as comfortable with it as windows) -learn about firewalls and routers, maybe take cisco course -learn about scripts -get familiar with citrix -microsoft exchange -sql server and mysql The more you know the better your chances. But, the above are the most crucial and will give you an edge in finding a job. You should be patient because no matter how much you know you will be given basic jobs like pc support, scavenging for parts, or technical phone support. Admins protect their positions from newbies and no one will want to teach you anything. You have to learn on your own and constantly look for new opportunities at your own company and others. In the end if you want the good positions you will have to switch jobs until you find the one you want. Good luck.
