How Do I Fix This Windows 7 Wireless Connection Problem?

Wireless Connection problem - can you help? UK only [ I have Windows XP, Built in wireless card, Laptop new].

  • I've asked this question before, but the answers I've received were far from helpful - so I'm giving it another go. I'm having problems connecting to the Internet through my home's Wireless Connection (Sky). Whenever I try to connect, it takes at least five minutes before I get a response, and when I do get a response, it's comes up as "Limited or No Connectivity" even though the signal strength is Excellent or Very Good. The problem started just a few days ago; it was working properly before then. I know there's nothing wrong with the wireless box/router as there are other users in my house who's not having any problem with the connection. I've tried to fix it by clicking on "Repair this connection" but it's no help. My Network Key is correct and I'm able to connect through other unprotected wireless connections - so what could be the problem? There's probably something wrong with the settings on my computer, if so, how do I sort it out? Windows XP. Built in wireless card. Laptop new.

  • Answer:

you say the key is correct - are you using the Hex value for the key (different makes use different algorithms meaning the normal key may be interpreted differently).

Generally, limited or no connectivity is a problem with the key. Signal strength means that the hardware (router and card in computer) see each other and are connected. However, the "key" is what gets you an IP address and access to the internet. You need to check the "encryption" level. Is the router looking for 64bit or 128bit? Is the router looking for WEP, WPA, WPA2 etc? Look at the settings in the router, or one of the other users in the house and make sure yours is set the same. I would start by deleting the current profile you have set for that connection and let windows find it again, then enter the new settings that you have confirmed from another user. Good Luck.

This would normally suggest that you aren't receiving an IP address. Although your machine is seeing the wireless network, it is failing to authenticate with it properly & is refused access by the routers DHCP service. At the command prompt, type ipconfig & see if you have a 169 address. If you do, it may be that the key you are entering isn't actually correct. Test this by connecting to you router & disabling security. See if you can connect then. Don't forget to turn it back on again afterwards :0)

Are your trying to connected to a protected wireless hotspot? If yes, then check with your System Administrator or Provider. Are you using Static or Dynamic IP? Please check your IP Address. Unload other program running in your laptop before connecting. Lastly, try using your friends Wireless Card if same problem occurs.

There are many places to look into. Signal Problems: Do you have low signal? Do you have wireless phones or wireless security cameras working in the 2.4GHz band? Add to the list baby monitors and microwaves. Try changing wireless channels in the wireless router until you get one that works. Usually you will have it auto. Change it to a different channel and apply. See if you connection now does not shows the triangle with the exclamation mark. Repeat with next channel until you get rid of the triangle and the exclamation mark Continuous drop connections might also be observed when you connect the wireless routers to a surge protector. If you connect it to an UPS or direct to the wall it will have continous feed of energy, and drop connections should stop. IP Problems: Do you have a fix IP or do you get one dynamically assigned? Checkc your TCP/IP Settings for the Wireless Network Adapter. Compare the Wireless IP with the LAN IP with "IPConfig /all" at the command promt. If you have different numbers for Gateway, DNS, and Assigned IP there must be a manual assignment in one of the network adapters. Wireless Service Down (Wireless Zero Configuration) Check by performing a right click on top of "My Computer" icon, select "Manage", go to "Services and Applications", select "Services", check "Wireless Zero Configuration". If it does not state "started" you can manually start the service on the screen or by double clicking the name of the service. Anyway, this is a basic to trouble shoot guide and some steps above-mentioned are for XP and Windows 2000 versions.

The answer I bet you is very simple Change the channel on the router from the default channel 6 to any other ( channels 1 and 11 are the next best choices) Also change the ssid from the default of default or linksys to anything else even if even add only a digit to set up router examples are here http://portforward.com/english/routers/wireless/routerindex.htm A very usefull network setup and maintenance utility http://www.networkmagic.com/ Change the channel You have a neighbour's wireless signal drifting in
